Apple might finally refresh its MacBook lineup, and in a big way

If you're looking to buy a new MacBook, iMac or a Mac Pro computer, we feel for you.

Apple hasn't launched any major updates to any of these devices in ages, and buying anything now feels like a wrong move as everyone feels a major update is in order.

But when is this sorely needed update coming? According to a new Bloombergreport, it's not going to happen at the Sept. 7 iPhone event, but it might happen later this year.

What's interesting about this report is not the timing, which is vague and has been more or less reported before, but the scope of changes Apple might bring to its laptops and desktop computers.

According to Bloomberg, we'll see new versions of the iMac, with refreshed graphics, an updated MacBook Air, a thinner MacBook Pro with a touchscreen instead of function keys, and a new, standalone 5K monitor Apple is making in collaboration with LG. This should bring a smile to the faces of folks who loved Apple's Thunderbolt display -- the company's only standalone monitor -- which was discontinued this year.

The Mac Pro, which hasn't been updated since its launch in early 2014 (and is now ridiculously obsolete), is not mentioned in the report; neither is the newest of all computers in Apple's lineup, the ultra-thin MacBook.

Bloomberg's report also claims Apple plans to update its iPad software with new features aimed at professional users. This might include an update to the Apple Pencil, as well as an option for users to annotate objects in many apps across the whole OS. Furthermore, the company plans to launch a new version of the iPad Pro, with a 10.5-inch screen size. All that, however, is not coming until next year.

On Sept. 7, we'll almost certainly see the iPhone 7 (or several variants of it) and the Apple Watch. We'll be there in San Francisco to cover the event live.
